Recorded by Crystal Gayle in 1978, "When I Dream" written by Sandy Mason Theoret was the third single to be released from her album of the same title. It reached #3 in the Country charts, and #80 in the national Billboard pop charts. Crystal certainly did the song justice, as did Willie Nelson in 1986 on his album 'Partners'. Sandwiched between these two versions is the stunning vocal by Julie Andrews that she included on her 1982 'Love Me Tender' collection. Produced by Larry Butler in Nashville with Billy Sherrill and Harold Lee, and backed by The Jordanaires, it is one of my favourite female Country albums and a testament to Julie's great versatility. Proof indeed that "less is more", Julie's gentle caressing vocal reveals hidden depths to her own interpretation of a lyric that both adds and enhances meaning to the excellent Gayle and Nelson versions. A gem of a track!
