On February 9, 71 AD, a man named Likaj was honorably discharged from the navy of the mighty Roman Empire. As a proof of that, he received this diploma made of bronze sheet. Its four pages contain engraved text with his name, the name of his father Birsus, the name of Emperor Vespasianus who issued the diploma, Sextus Lucilius Bassus, commander of the Misenum fleet in which Likaj served and seven witnesses whose seals guaranteed the authenticity of the document. The date the diploma was issued is also written in the text, as well as the rights and privileges this provincial, a member of the Illyrian-Pannonian tribe Breuci acquired by serving more than 26 years in the navy where he received the rank of centurion. And for the area of Brod - Posavlje, the engraved name of Marsunnia is certainly the most significant, the latter being an ancient settlement that was once located on the site of Slavonski Brod. Despite the fact he had received land in Campania, Italy, as a reward for his service, as well as the rights to citizenship and marriage, he decided to return home. Why? We can only speculate. This military diploma, found in 1997 in Sava, was left behind to tell his story.
