Experiences of Energy Transitions – lessons from the past

As we go through a major energy transition to reliance on renewables, the future for energy workers, their families and communities is at stake.
Since the end of the Second World War Britain has been through a number of important energy transitions. Some of them were more successful in delivering a just transition than others. What can we learn from past energy transitions like the displacement of coal by gas, oil and nuclear power?
Dr Ewan Gibbs of Glasgow University has interviewed current and former workers employed in these industries. His findings demonstrate that workers have been willing to move to new sectors, and even in some cases to geographically relocate, where they have been provided with suitable offers of long-term employment stability.
These earlier experiences are important learning opportunities for today, demonstrating the potential for a just transition which reinforces economic security. This is shown to be dependent on the political will to challenge the prerogatives of private ownership and the profits of multinationals which currently dominate our energy system.
This event hears a presentation from Ewan followed by a presentation from the STUCs' Ryan Morrison on the STUCs research into the offshore wind sector in Scotland.
