In March 2023, East Sussex Public Health carried out a review of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) — a long-term lung condition that makes breathing difficult. They found that many people who came to Change Grow Live (CGL) for support with alcohol or drug use were also struggling with respiratory issues. Because some people find it hard to access healthcare, a new pathway was set up to help.
Through this pathway, people were offered support and advice to manage their breathing problems. This included help with inhaler use, encouragement to get vaccinated, medication reviews, and referrals to specialist stop smoking services. Some were also given vape starter kits with brief behavioural support. Everyone had a full check-up to understand their symptoms and rule out other causes.
