On the hills surrounding, a helicopter can be seen shooting wild goats and Himilayian tahr, another invasive species to New Zealand. The Himalayan tahr was introduced in the early 1900s for sport hunting. These large, goat-like animals have thrived in the Southern Alps, causing significant damage to native alpine plants and ecosystems. With no natural predators, their population can grow unchecked, leading to overgrazing and trampling of vegetation that native wildlife depends on. Efforts to control their numbers include regulated hunting and conservation programs.
