The Wanderer above the Sea of Fog is a famous painting made in 1818 by German artist Caspar David Friedrich. This painting is quintessential romanticism and is renowned for its sense of journey and the power of landscape. There is also a clear sense of mystery to the painting: who is the man standing on the top of the hill and where is this place, or where did Friedrich got inspired to draw this masterpiece?
To find the answers to these questions, we embarked on a journey through Germany, starting off at the Hamburg Kunsthalle and leading us to the Saxon Switzerland National Park. Will we uncover the mystery of the painting?
