Love Is the Street Name for God

What is love? It is said that God is love, but that doesn’t actually describe it. Is love a feeling? And why does it usually seem to arise in relation to certain people in our lives?

Rupert says: ‘Love is not a feeling or an emotion. I would suggest that love is the shining of God’s presence in our hearts – it is the nature of being that shines when all our obscuring feelings subside. When the obscuring feelings rise again, love seems to disappear. But it doesn’t. It is just veiled.

‘Why is this experience of love often seemingly caused by meeting a friend or a companion? Because up until we meet, we are in a state of longing or expectation. And when we meet, that feeling comes to an end, and the background of being, which was always shining, now shines unobscured in our experience.’
