From the original files. The story goes like this, early on in my “career” I was contacted by Mark Cantrill “Legends and Champions” to do all the video and production work for this extremely special challenge match that he and local business man Bob Finke and others around Lincoln Nebraska had put together at a pool room called Drifters.
I had been producing for barely over a year at this point but had great equipment and was hungry for work. I made an agreement that I would come out and produce the match in exchange for the content rights to make DVDS of the event with. I was a straight up street hustler, I figured all the work put into it on the backend the content would have been the most valuable thing. The match was to be a PPV event which back then was extremely rare but I had made arrangements to do the event through Ustream (the first live streaming platform ever developed, long since defunct) and the event would make the majority of the proceeds. Everything was setup with the engineers at Ustream and things should have been great but little did I even know that this was Ustreams first pay per view event! The first day production was horrendous on the back end, many of the customers who purchased the event could not watch, and others could and as a result was very at the moment “fog of war” to use a phrase you might understand. My computer had some issues and what we captured had some digital flaws in it but it was all raw on the fly production that did improve after a little tech troubleshooting. After the first days fisasco we all decided to give the rest out for free and provide everyone refunds.

This is all looking back many years later but as I remember we had to rent a car to drive to the event. I also was provided TV quality wireless mics that I implemented into the show, never since have I done that again they were actual broadcast production mics worth several thousand a piece. The players were mic’d up during the entire event and the audio was mixed in with the commentary via mixing boards. This is the impetus of the famous Archer going to the bathroom live on air story I tell from time to time.

The production was my desktop and an impressive 3 camera setup, one of which was a LIVE floating camera which was manned by my girlfriend Sherodaka Gipson. She was a huge part of this event and a big part of the first few years of my broadcast work. On this event she even stepped up to do an insightful personal after the match interview with Johnny Archer which was in my opinion the crown of the whole adventure.

These type of things are pretty common in recent years but back in the day April 2011 to be exact this was really special and a rare occurrence. Lots of top talent was recruited to produce this 2 day matchup including Nick Varner, Shawn Putnam and referee Bill Stock.
As I said earlier the goal was to make DVDs of the event and man I went all out entrepanuer. I bought a professional DVD authoring tower and devised a 5 disc box set of which I probably made about 75 sets and sold them directly and at “shows”
So the match consisted of an 8 Ball set 1 Disc a 10 Ball set 2nd Disc and a Race to 200 in 14.1 Straight Pool 3rd and 4th Disc of which was the best performance of the players, in addition the Interview with Johnny Archer as a bonus 5th disc.

In celebration of my work and frankly because I can, I am putting the entire thing up here on Youtube. I don’t know how it’s going to work out theres lots of commercial music in the videos. Hopefully I can use the Youtube tools to fix it up.
