It is difficult to hear Songolo’s
and Mishia’s story without
wondering how in the world they
were able to overcome the horrific
circumstances of war: genocide
in Democratic Republic of Congo
(DRC), Burundi and Rwanda that
claimed as many as 800,000 lives
and drove nearly half a millio n
refugees to seek asylum in other
countries. After they left DRC in
1996 and arrived at a Tanzanian
refugee camp thinking they had
escaped the worst, Songolo and
Mishia found themselves unable
to leave the camp for nearly 25 years. It wasn’t until 2019 that
they were able to arrive in the U.S. with their family and only
the clothes on their backs.
First and foremost, they needed jobs to support them selves
and buy a car. Songolo recalled a t-shirt he’d been given in
the refugee camp that said, “Goodwill.” Perhaps it was a good
omen, the first in a long time for this courageous family.
Songolo felt that Goodwill would be a good place to work,
and he was right. He and Mishia were hired at our commercial
laundry, and things began to look up.
