O Meien has what he calls a "Zone Press" strategy that gives him a fast-paced opening and tends to control large areas of the board. While playing in an exciting style that was difficult for other pros to emulate, he succeeded in winning titles such as the Honinbo and Oza. His ability to coin phrases and his entertaining sense of humor makes him a popular TV Go analyst and writer.

1988 was a big year for me, in which I reached the final sections of tournaments and got some valuable experience by challenging top players. This was the final round of the 3rd section of the Judan tournament, and followed a game I played against Kiyonari Testuya 9p    • vs. Kiyonari Tetsuya 9P 　My game against a...  
O Meien was already close to the top sections of tournaments, and would later win major tournaments such as the Honinbo and Oza. In this game I will not have a decisive advantage until the late endgame.
