Sources of Islamic Law refer to the foundational texts and interpretative tools through which Islamic legal rulings (Ahkam) are derived. These sources form the basis of Shariah, governing all aspects of a Muslim’s personal, social, economic, and spiritual life.
The sources are traditionally divided into primary and secondary sources:
Primary Sources:
Qur’an
The supreme source of Islamic law.
Contains divine commandments related to beliefs, worship, morality, personal law, criminal law, etc.
About 500 verses directly relate to legal matters.
Sunnah (Hadith)
The practices, sayings, and approvals of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Explains and elaborates Qur’anic injunctions.
Legally binding when authentically reported and not contradicted by the Qur’an.
