Valletta, the capital city of Malta, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the smallest capital in the European Union. Built in the 16th century by the Knights Hospitaller and named after Jean Parisot de Valette, it boasts stunning Baroque architecture, fortified walls, and a rich history, including its defense during the Great Siege of Malta. Often called an "open-air museum," Valletta is packed with historical monuments, palaces like the Grandmaster's Palace, and significant churches such as St. John's Co-Cathedral, home to Caravaggio's masterpiece. As a cultural hub, Valletta offers vibrant shopping, dining, and café life, and was recognized as the European Capital of Culture in 2018. Despite suffering damage in World War II, Valletta retains its historical charm and continues to be a captivating destination with impressive fortifications and beautiful gardens overlooking its two harbors, the Grand Harbour and Marsamxett.
