Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine was founded in the late 11th century
as the guardian shrine of the Minamoto samurai clan.
It is closely associated with Minamoto no Yoritomo,
the first shogun of the Kamakura shogunate,
and has a history of approximately 800 years.
Even after the fall of Japan’s first samurai government,
it continued to be revered by later warrior regimes.
During the Edo period, Tokugawa Ieyasu devoted efforts
to its restoration and protection.
Today, it remains a popular tourist destination.
