Hey!! Welcome back to the Jazz Age with this rare 1920s piano roll of “Sweet Man” by Lee Sims. It's full of vintage charm and this performance brings a forgotten classic back to life. If you love old-time jazz, ragtime, or vintage piano roll music, this one is irresistible! Lee Sims was a genius!
This particular piano roll caught the attention of my friend and fellow player piano enthusiast, @rowanbelt3612 One day he asked me if I would be willing to let him borrow this very roll. Of course I was honored he would even ask me. He has meticulously studied Lee Sims and has been able to transcribe several Sims piano roll arrangements BACK onto paper,/digital sheet music, thus making them visible and playable for pianists. He's quite literally saving and preserving this music from going extinct. In a fun collaboration with him, he's also posting his performance of this exact roll today on his channel.
“Sweet Man” was published in 1925 by Pinkard & Turk and one of the earliest known recorded versions was by Ethel Waters — her version of “Sweet Man” dates to October 1925.
