Let me be your acrylic art instructor as I teach you easy step-by-step instructions throughout this fun beginner art video as you learn how to paint a rose and violets in a vase-a romantic still life painting “Roses are Red, Violets are Blue”. Ask me to name a famous poem and I could probably come up with a handful before resorting to Google help. There's that one by Shakespeare that starts with, “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day…”, which I learned about in Highschool, Edgar Allen Poe’s, “The Raven”, which I only learned about after I did a painting tutorial of a raven for Halloween last year, “O Captain My Captain” by Walt Whitman, of which I only know from watching the movie Dead Poets Society¸ and “The Road not Taken” by Robert Frost, which everyone refers to when talking about the road less travelled in life. Regardless of whether you like poetry or not, we can all agree that probably the most famous poem ever written is the poem that begins with “Roses are Red, Violets are Blue...”. That’s because this famous line is a gateway for everyone, from comics to romantics, to show off their poetry skills. Here’s one I just came up with: Roses are Red, Violets are Blue. I love painting, and so should you!” How about that!!!! So, join me and manifest the greatest poem ever by painting a red rose and blue violets. The first lesson you’ll learn is how to paint a background using dark colors to create a romantic ambience, perfect for setting the mood for love and romance. After learning how to draw flowers and a vase using a dot-to-dot drawing method, you’ll apply a simple base coat to work off of. Next, you’ll use a directional brushstroke to paint stems to your flowers, and then you’ll use a one stroke painting technique to make your flower petals. Then you’ll add highlights and shadows to the petals and leaves for added depth and dimension, creating an impressionistic style that has a 3-d photo realistic appearance. Then you'll paint shadows and reflections on the table, in the water and on the glassware with complimentary colors from the surrounding objects to enhance the perspective and give a three-dimensional effect of the vase and flowers. With these simple painting methods, you can paint any type of flower you want whether it’s a tulip, lily, carnation, orchid, bird of paradise, sunflower, peony, hydrangea, or daisy, and you could even paint any type of vessel, a cup, bowl, or planter. The point is to just have fun with this endearing romantic image! The painting process for this enchanting image is so simple you’ll feel like it is a paint by numbers. Using only 3 brushes and 8 colors, you’ll paint like a professional! Have a date night at home, paint party, paint and sip event, or virtual paint night. Paint with gouache, oil paint, or watercolor, any medium will work! Paint just for fun or for art therapy. It's an easy art project. Canvas: 16x20 stretched primed canvas
Brushes: 1 inch flat bristle, #6 round synthetic, #2 bright synthetic
Acrylic Paint: titanium white, purple violet, mars black, burnt umber (brown), chrome yellow, fire red, cobalt blue and green oxide
Other: Chalk, cup of water for washing brushes, paper towel for drying brushes

STEPS:
1. 1 inch bristle brush – Paint base coat for canvas with black
2. 1 inch bristle brush – Paint background and tabletop with black, brown and white
3. Chalk – Draw outline for vase and flowers
4. #6 round brush – Paint base coat for flowers with red, green, brown, purple and white
5. #6 round brush – Paint the stems and finish leaves with green, yellow, white, brown and black
6. #2 bright brush – Finish violet flowers with purple, white, blue and yellow
7. #2 bright brush – Paint shadows on rose with red and black
8. #2 bright brush – Finish rose with white, yellow, red and brown
9. #6 round brush – Finish vase with white, black, brown, red, blue, lavender (made in step 4) and yellow
10. #6 round brush – Paint shadows and reflections with purple, black, white, lavender, blue, red, yellow, green and brown
11. #6 round brush – Sign with black
