Here’s the authentic South Karnataka–style Mixed Kalina Saaru (Mixed Pulses Curry) recipe-a hearty, earthy, and protein-rich dish that pairs beautifully with Ragi Mudde.
🌾 Mixed Kalina Saaru Recipe (Mixed Pulses Curry)
🕒 Time
Soaking time: 6–8 hours (or overnight)
Prep time: 15 minutes
Cook time: 30 minutes
Serves: 4 people
🧺 Ingredients
For cooking the pulses:
Mixed pulses – 1 cup (green gram, cowpea, horse gram, black chana, soya bean,Dried green peas, edamame etc.)
Water – 3 cups
pealed and chopped medium sized potato and brinjal, edamame- 1 cup each(optional)
Salt – to taste
A pinch of turmeric powder
For the masala paste:
Oil – 2 tsp
Grated coconut – ½ cup
Dry red chilies – 5 to 6 (adjust spice or red chilli powder)
Coriander seeds – 1 tbsp
Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
cinnamon stick -(1-2)
Black pepper – ¼ tsp (optional)
clove -(2-4)
Garlic – 5 to 6 cloves
Ginger - 1 inch
fresh Coriander- 1 bunch
tomato-1 whole(diced into medium size pieces)
onion-1 whole(diced into medium size pieces)
Curry leaves – 6 to 8
Onion – ½ (optional, for more flavor)
For tempering:
Oil or ghee – 2 tsp
Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
Cumin seeds – ½ tsp
Poppy seeds-1/2 tsp
Curry leaves – few
👩🍳 Instructions
1️⃣ Soak and Cook the Pulses
Wash and soak the mixed pulses overnight.
2️⃣ Prepare the Masala Paste
Heat 2 tsp oil in a small pan.
Add Onion, tomato,fresh Coriander, Ginger, coriander seeds, cinnamon stick, cumin seeds, red chilies, black pepper, garlic,Poppy seeds, curry leaves and Grated coconut
Add grated coconut and roast lightly till golden.
Cool the mixture, then grind it and little water into a smooth paste.
4️⃣ Prepare the Tempering
Heat oil or ghee in a pressure cooker.
Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves.
Let it splutter, then pour this grinded paste and add turmeric powder cook until raw smell disappears.
to the same cooker mix the cooked pulses and pealed and chopped medium sized potato and brinjal, edamame.
Add salt to taste and bring it to a boil.
Adjust consistency with water — it should be slightly thick but pourable.
add close the lid and let it Cook for 2 whistles, so the flavors blend beautifully.
5️⃣ Serve Hot
Serve Mixed Kalina Saaru hot with Ragi Mudde, rice, or idlis.
