In this video series I am working through recreating a birch bark bowl/container that I created in a community education class taught by Minnesota Artist and North House Folk School instructor Dennis Chilcote.
Birch bark is the "Tupperware" of the forest. The [paper] birch tree is an extremely versatile and useful tree that has been used for food, medicine, and utilities by many different cultures throughout the world for millinea.
Here I am using a Red-Osier Dogwood (Cornus sericea) as a stabilizing rim for this project. The original had a machined birch wood rim.
