Harnessing Generative AI for Effective Learning: An AI in Higher Education Webinar with Dr. De Liu

As concerns grow worldwide over the use of large language model (LLM) chatbots for schoolwork, our understanding remains limited regarding their effects on learning and how they might be designed to support it. In this webinar, I will first share experimental findings on how a standard ChatGPT chatbot can impede learning and a custom chatbot designed with a guide-discovery approach can significantly boost learning. I will then discuss the design of SmartPAL, a learning tool that is designed to harness the power of LLM chatbots and gamification to provide timely, personalized, and contextualized support to students and instructors.
Dr. De Liu is a Xian Dong Eric Jing Professor of Information and Decision Sciences at the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota, and the principal investigator behind SmartPAL, a gamified, generative-AI-powered digital assistant for students and instructors.
