The Syrian government has agreed to allow United Nations weapons inspectors investigate allegations of a suspected chemical weapons attack near the capital Damascus on Wednesday.
The team of 20 experts, already in the city, begin their work today. The announcement by the government of Bashar al-Assad comes following the arrival of UN disarmament chief Angela Kane who met with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Al-Moualem.
Syrian state media said that chemical agents had been found in tunnels used by rebels and that forces has suffered "suffocation" in the Jobar district of Damascus.
Medecins Sans Frontieres said over the weekend that it had treated more than 3,600 people with "neurotoxic symptoms" last Wednesday, the day of the alleged chemical attack. 355 had reportedly died at three hospitals it supports in Damascus.
