Lyrics
“The Other Side of the Mountains
(Verse 1)
Down in southeast Kentucky, where the hills hold every sound,
Lived a God Fearing man with his boots on holy ground.
He loved the Lord with all his heart, he would pray alone at night,
But inside him burned a love he tried with all his might to fight.
He was drawn to other men, a feeling to his core,
So he walked away from that life, closed and locked that door.
He married a good woman, built a home, tried to stand tall,
For six long years he gave his part, gave that marriage all.
(Verse 2)
But longing don’t die quiet, it waits and then it calls,
And love came unexpected like a crack in hearts walls.
He was thirty-two, the boy was young, just twenty-five,
And somehow in that moment, his heart felt so alive.
He left his wife, his little son just six years old,
Three years with that young man, a love both fierce and cold.
They tried to make a life, but the storms were loud and wild,
And bitterness grew between them like a wounded, crying child.
(Chorus)
He stood on the other side of the mountain,
Between heaven, truth, and pain,
Loved a woman, loved a man,
Carried both like iron chains.
Didn’t stop being who he was,
Didn’t stop loving her,
Didn’t stop loving him,
Just learned how deep the heart can hurt.
(Verse 3)
After four years he went back home, his son was ten by then,
His wife, with mercy in her eyes, took him back again.
He loved her still, he always had, through every wrong and right,
But the hunger for men never left him in the night.
He didn’t turn straight, he didn’t change, he only learned to live,
With a truth the church wouldn’t bless, but his heart did not forget
So late one night by a green-glow screen, when the world was fast asleep,
He poured his life into the mountains of memory he still kept.
(Verse 4)
He wrote a story of two men, of love that dared to stand,
He put them alone upon a mountain holding each other’s hand.
He didn’t know the world would take it, turn it into gold,
He only knew his heart was breaking and the truth had to be told.
That story made the world cry, made millions understand,
Made fortunes for the ones who claimed it, but forgot the man.
Now he’s sick with a tired heart, his wife is ill too,
No money, no credit, just a lifetime of truth.
(Chorus)
He stood on the other side of the mountain,
Between scripture, love, and fear,
With a woman by his bedside,
And the memory of a man still near.
He didn’t steal no story,
He didn’t chase no fame,
He only told what love had done,
And the world called it by another name.
(Bridge)
She knows his heart, she knows his past,
She knows the truth he carries still,
She lets him speak it, lets him breathe it,
Lets him be the man God made him to be.
(Final Verse)
Now he tells it in his own words, slow and plain and strong,
About the cost of loving deep and living all your wrongs.
About faith that bends but don’t break,
About mercy that still stays,
About a man who loved a woman,
And loved a man, in different ways.
(Final Chorus)
Still on the other side of the mountain,
Still telling what is real,
Not asking for their millions,
Just asking for his truth to heal.
With his wife beside him in the night,
And God above them all,
He stands in the light of what he lived,
And answers love’s last call.
