🌟US Visa Bulletin May 2025: Bad News for Indian Workers as Green Card Wait Times Increase.


👉🏻Today, we bring you an important update that could deeply impact thousands of Indian professionals and families dreaming of settling in the United States. The American Dream, once seen as a clear path for skilled workers and investors, now seems to be slipping further away for many. The United States Department of State has just released the Visa Bulletin for May 2025, and the news isn't good — especially for Indians waiting under various employment-based visa categories.

The biggest shock has come in the EB-5 visa category, also known as the investor visa. This category allows foreign nationals to invest in the US economy and, in return, get a green card. But now, for Indian applicants under the EB-5 Unreserved category, the visa cutoff date has moved backward — or retrogressed — by more than six months. The new date is May 1, 2019. That means anyone who applied after this date will have to wait even longer to move forward in the green card process. For comparison, China’s date remains unchanged at January 22, 2014, which shows how far behind the queue can get.

Why did this happen? The US government explains that high demand from Indian applicants, combined with rising demand from other countries, forced them to retrogress the cutoff date. This helps them manage the yearly visa limits. Every year, only a limited number of green cards can be issued, and each country cannot get more than 7% of the total available visas. For employment-based visas, the global limit is about 140,000 each year. Out of that, only around 25,000 can go to any one country like India.

But the bad news doesn’t end with EB-5. Let’s look at other visa categories too. In the EB-1 category, which is for highly skilled professionals like researchers and multinational executives, India’s cutoff date is stuck at February 2, 2022 — no progress this month. In EB-2, which is for professionals with advanced degrees, the date remains unchanged at January 1, 2013 — more than 12 years of waiting. That’s a long delay for people who have lived and worked in the US for years, contributing to its economy and society.

There’s a small ray of hope in the EB-3 category, meant for skilled workers and professionals. For Indian applicants, the cutoff date has moved forward slightly — by just two weeks — to April 15, 2013. Even though it’s a small step, it still shows how slow the process has become.

This situation is frustrating for many families, especially those who have spent years in the US, often on H-1B visas, waiting patiently for their green cards. Their children grow up in America, go to American schools, and dream of building their futures there — only to be told they must wait years more for permanent residency.

One major reason for this growing visa backlog is the immigration policies being introduced after Donald Trump returned to the White House in January 2025.
