Putting a new twist on an old idea: the tool handle. I've been wanting to try this for awhile, and when the handle broke on this hammer I decided it was time. It was an experiment, and turned out nicely in my opinion.
I made my twist blanks 1.5" square. That works fine if you want to do a single twist handle, as shown toward the end of the video. In the video, I made two twist blanks, twisting them in opposite directions, and then cut them in order to make a book-matched blank. My waste pieces from these cuts were pretty thin, and could possibly be used for a very small handle, but really aren't much use. If I were to do it again, I would make the blanks 2" square, and then you could definitely get 2 nice handles out of it.
With modern glues, the laminated construction of these handles definitely makes them stronger than solid wood, and much less likely to split. I don't think the twist adds any strength, and is just for looks. Some might argue that the twist could detract from the strength of the handle, but I doubt it. Time will tell.
