Branding Iron for an Identification Tablet of a Commanding General of the Five Military Commands

이번 달 소개해 드릴 유물은 조선시대 위장의 신분을 증명하는 나무 패 뒷면에 찍었던 ‘위장 낙인’ 입니다. 낙인은 불에 달구어 사용하는 불도장으로 신분패에 찍어 위조를 방지하는 역할을 한 유물입니다.
For the Curator’s Choice of December, I would like to introduce the branding iron that was used for marking the back of the identification tablet of the commanding general of the Five Military Commands during the Joseon Dynasty. This branding iron was heated over an open fire and pressed onto an identification tablet as a means to prevent counterfeiting.
