Despite the Earth being 70% water, millions of people still lack access to clean water
sources. Researchers at J-WAFS took on the issue, creating a device that can collect water from the most unlikely of sources: the air.
Adela Chenyang Li is one of J-WAFS 2025-2026 Rasikbhai L. Meswani Fellows for Water Solutions. Her research, in collaboration with co-advisors Professor Evelyn Wang and Professor Gang Chen, focuses on advancing sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting technologies (SAWH). The device uses a powder-like material, one that can absorb water in the most arid regions. During trials, the technology has been able to efficiently collect clean water from the air.
Adela hopes her work can provide a better understanding of microscopic
processes governing the limits of the technology and serve as an example of a practical
SAWH application in the real world.
