When 2,000 Viet Cong troops attacked Dong Xoai Special Forces camp on June 9th, 1965, the 11 Green Berets and 9 Navy Seabees inside were quickly overrun and forced into a desperate 14-hour last stand at the district headquarters. The battle produced two Medal of Honor recipients including Lieutenant Williams who was wounded seven times but kept fighting, and Seabee Marvin Shields who died destroying an enemy position and resulted in 1,600 casualties that shocked American commanders into realizing their Vietnam strategy had failed.
