Thousands of Japanese citizens, led by Nihon Hidankyo, the country’s leading atomic bomb survivors group, held a massive rally in Tokyo on Friday to protest Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s efforts to revise Japan’s Three Non-Nuclear Principles.
Organizers submitted a petition with over 3.449 million signatures to lawmakers, urging the government to uphold the national credo and legally enshrine the principles that prohibit Japan from possessing, producing, or allowing nuclear weapons on its soil.
Protesters also voiced opposition to Japan’s recent export of Patriot air-defense missiles to the United States, marking the country’s first arms export since relaxing export controls. Lawmakers and party leaders warned that such steps could fuel conflict and violate Japan’s pacifist stance.
The Three Non-Nuclear Principles, first declared in 1967, remain a symbol of Japan’s commitment to peace. As Takaichi’s government considers revising national security policies by 2026, citizens and political leaders are mobilizing to defend the principles and Japan’s post-war pacifist path.
