Colours of the Silk Road is a collection of artist’s books exploring the medieval origins of artists’ pigments. The project consists of seven books, each dedicated to a different colour and incorporating a distinct paper-engineering technique.
The story follows Adalina, a nun, and her cat, Eggbert, as they work on a manuscript for the archbishop. When their supply of ultramarine runs out, the pair embark on an epic journey along ancient trade routes in search of the precious pigment. Along the way, they encounter a world rich in colour and culture.
The project is a work of faction, blending fiction with historical research and inspired by real places, people, and pigments. My research included studying medieval manuscript production, visiting Bristol Library’s Special Collections of medieval manuscripts, and exploring historic sites such as the Hereford Mappa Mundi and Gloucester Cathedral. This research informed the project, grounding it in authentic medieval life and artistic practice.
The series celebrates the history of colour and the dedication of historical artists who went to great lengths to obtain their materials. Designed to engage readers of all ages, the project aims to both educate and delight. Through interactive elements, playful paper engineering, and watercolour illustrations, the books invite readers to explore the rich and fascinating world of colour, inspiring curiosity about history, and art.
