Enjoy this behind the scenes look at the conservation works that took place recently on a section of Athlone's town walls. Originally constructed in the mid 13th century, the walls were extended, repaired and rebuilt over the years and were severely tested during the Williamite sieges of 1690 and 1691. This video gives an insight into the processes involved with conservation works. It features interviews with Westmeath County Council Heritage Officer, Melanie McQuade, the stonemason, arborist and conservation engineer who all worked on the project and will be of interest to anyone who would like to know more about the practicalities involved with conserving medieval masonry.
The Heritage Council funded the Athlone town walls conservation work through the IWTN with support from Westmeath County Council in September 2020.
