Songs are sorted by their Light difficulty, which is the difficulty I should've had represented in some way in hindsight lol
Here it is. The 7th release of DDR and my favorite mix in the entire series, above X2 and A20. Where the first MAX made a number of missteps, this one picks up a lot after that. Foot ratings are brought back as a supplement to the Groove Radar. Song-wise, the game has a large number of licenses but still has a bunch of new songs alongside it, meaning it would still have a sizeable amount of its list once it gets trimmed in the future. It's biggest contribution, however, is the addition of a brand new difficulty: Challenge. This was a difficulty that was touted to be even more difficult than Heavy(certainly wasn't like that at first lol), or, at least based on how later games describe it, have special charts. Though Kakumei is the only new song to actually have it as a selectable difficulty, there is something more to be done with the Challenge difficulty in this game, but you'll see what it is soon.
Some fun little trivia: the MAX era, as you may have noticed, use various kanji alongside their difficulties, similar to post-A DDR games. The specific Kanji used for Challenge translates to "Oni", which means "demon"/"devil" in Japanese. So if you've ever been curious why older DDR content or forums use their term "Oni" so much, it just means they're talking about challenge chart or course.
On the returning song front: MAX2 made a number of strides in that department as well. Besides the usual unlockable ones, something very interesting happened before the game's release. Konami held a questionnaire for Japanese players on what pre-MAX Bemani songs they would like revived in MAX2, to make up for the last game removing everything. Only the top 15 songs were supposed to be included, but it changed to top 30 after the turnout was much higher than expected. As an additional cool fact, the top 5 got added to the console version of the game later on. No matter how you look at it, that's honestly a really cool move on their part, and I would love to see them do something like this again except for songs up until SN2(and make the questionnaire international this time lol).
Anyhow, what else can I say? Does my nostalgia play a large role in my love for this game? Yeah. Do I still love it to death? Damn right I do.
"But where are the Challenge-Only Songs?"
Good question...
