Adreno's Sam Cox outlines the differences in float lines.
Entry level ski-rope material float lines are very durable due to their resistance to UV and abrasion from surfaces such as corals and oysters and is easy to splice. However, it’s more prone to tangling and catching on rocks and has less buoyancy which means it won’t rise to the surface as quickly giving it more time to tangle and catch on surfaces. Some ski-rope float lines counter this issue with a foam filling to increase buoyancy.
PVC style float lines are stiffer and cored with dyneema and suited to depths over 20 metres. This prevents tangling and provides a strong hold on larger fish. The hollow design gives it great buoyancy. The downside is they will eventually wear through, and holes in the outer tubing can cause the line to fill with water and sink. This makes it prone to damage from fish with sharp teeth capable of penetrating the line.
Bungee styled float lines are designed to relieve pressure on the rig and the shaft in the fish. This prevents damage to your rig and the shaft from tearing through the fish, making it great for hunting some pelagic species in blue water. Avoid using this float line when hunting dogtooth tuna as it will allow them to get to the reef and break you off or get eaten by sharks.
