A Journey Through Japan – Visiting Ise Grand Shrine, the Spiritual Heart of Japan
I had the honor of visiting Ise Grand Shrine, the most sacred Shinto shrine in Japan, for the very first time. It was also my first time transferring at Nagoya Station and using the Kintetsu Railway. I reserved a limited express ticket online and used my Suica card for the regular fare. I was a bit worried that Suica might not work at the Kintetsu gates, but thankfully, I had no issues entering the platform.
I had hoped to ride the limited express Shimakaze, but the timing didn’t work out, so I took the Urban Liner instead—which turned out to be quite comfortable as well. The Kii Peninsula was farther than I had expected, so I added an extra night at the last minute, making it a 5-day, 4-night trip. Even so, it didn’t feel like a leisurely journey—time flew by! 😊
I finally fulfilled my long-held dream of staying at some of the inns I’d always wanted to visit in the Kii Peninsula: Shima Kanko Hotel, Basara-tei, and Shima no Bettei Nakanoshima. And of course, I was able to pay my respects at the revered Ise Grand Shrine.
Since transportation in the area isn’t very convenient, I used a taxi to get around—from Ise Station to Meoto Iwa (the Wedded Rocks), Mikimoto Pearl Island, a sweets shop, a pearl store, and finally to my inn, Ise Shinsen. The taxi ride lasted over four hours and cost just under 14,000 yen, which was quite reasonable. Amazingly, the driver from Sanco Taxi even turned off the meter during waiting times—thank you so much! 🙏
The hospitality I received from the inn staff in Ise and from Ryu-san, the rickshaw puller, was incredibly warm. It made me realize that the spirit of welcoming travelers has long been a cherished tradition in this region.
Meeting kind-hearted locals is truly one of the greatest joys of travel!
