Agriculture experts say that the success of chemical weed control depends mainly upon the quality of herbicides and the spraying technology.
Weeds could lead to loss in the yield of wheat from 20 to 40%. Therefore, timely measures are needed to mitigate the loss. Suitable herbicides should be applied in consultation with the experts of the agriculture department after first irrigation on broad leaf as well as narrow leaf weeds for effective control by adopting proper spray techniques.
State award winner agriculture development officer (ADO) of Moga Dr Jaswinder Singh Brar, who has carried out demonstrations of spraying techniques at the government seed farm in Raunta village in the district, said that a majority of the farmers were unaware of the proper weedicide spraying techniques.
"Application techniques are most important in the management of Phalaris minor (gulli-danda) as proper spray pump nozzles, volume of water and optimum dose and the time of spray along with uniform coverage certainly help in better control of the weed," said the ADO.
He said that most of the farmers did not have proper nozzles fixed to their spray pumps, which did not give proper results. "I recommend the farmers to use flood jet and flat fan nozzles for uniform spray of weedicies on the weeds and never use cone type nozzles for spraying weedicides to get good results, spray should be done in a straight strip, the nozzle should not be moved away from the strip and it should be kept 40 to 50 cm above the crop for effective control of weeds," said the ADO.
