🕰️ Step back into the brutal winter of the 1850s.
In this new chapter, William spends the night guarding Margaret’s cabin after the deadly bear attack. At dawn, the two begin their day by making cheese together before heading to the town market through deep snow and freezing winds.
But the journey turns dangerous when a massive bear blocks their path. It steals the cheese they worked so hard to make—forcing them to flee for their lives. Hungry and exhausted on the way back, William catches fish from an icy river, and they share a warm meal by the fire, finding comfort in each other’s calm presence.
Back home, the dangers return. William digs a trench around the cabin, but wild animals still cross into the yard. Standing guard through the night, he realizes violence will not solve this winter’s fight—so he chooses another path: forming a civil bond with the bear.
He offers bread with an open hand… and the bear walks away peacefully.
Later that night, when wolves surround the cabin, the same bear returns—this time defending Margaret and William. A fragile yet powerful bond is born in this frozen land.
At sunrise, Margaret prepares breakfast, only to find the bear returning with a fish in its mouth—placing it gently at her window.
The harsh winter finally offers warmth.
This episode is told with almost no dialogue—just crackling fire, deep snow, distant howls, and the soft rhythm of daily survival.
