San Francisco, July 29, 2025 – Asia Society Northern California kick off its annual Seeking Truth Through Facts Series with a timely conversation on China’s economic future.
Panelists include Yasheng Huang, Professor of Global Economics and Management at the MIT Sloan School, and Victor Shih, Director of the 21st Century China Center and Professor in China and Pacific Relations at the School of Global Policy and Strategy at UC San Diego. The program is moderated by Andy Rothman, Senior China Fellow at the Asia Society of Northern California & Seattle.
The speakers examine how China’s evolving economic policies intersect with its geopolitical ambitions and domestic challenges, offering insights into where the country may be headed. The panel also assesses the Made in China 2025 initiative, acknowledging its success in advancing the Chinese government's economic upgrading goals, but asserting that its benefits have not necessarily trickled down to the general population. Looking ahead, Shih and Huang stress the importance of rebalancing China’s economic strategy by aligning its growing supply capacity with domestic demand. Doing so, they argued, would not only stabilize China’s economy but also have positive ripple effects for the global economic system.
