Installing IRIX | InstallOS

IRIX is a Unix operating system developed by Silicon Graphics (SGI) for its workstations and servers, widely recognized for its exceptional performance in graphics computing, 3D modeling, and high-performance processing. Based on System V with BSD extensions, IRIX stood out in the 1990s and early 2000s as the platform of choice for animation studios, engineering, and scientific applications that required advanced computational power. Its graphical interface, the Indigo Magic Desktop, provided a sophisticated visual environment for the time, making it easier to interact with complex graphical applications.

What made IRIX unique was its optimization for SGI hardware, fully leveraging MIPS processors and the graphical capabilities of these machines to deliver unmatched performance in rendering and simulations. Additionally, it introduced innovative technologies such as XFS, one of the first high-performance journaling file systems, and advanced support for multiprocessing. Although it has been discontinued, IRIX is still remembered as a milestone in professional graphics computing and the history of Unix systems.
