Coaster Trains and the Del Mar Block on Amtrak 591 - 4K

Watch in 4K Resolution! I finally had some time to go trackside with my camera to catch some action on the Surfline. Here are a few Friday Afternoon trains in the San Diego area, including Amtrak 591 with the extra "Del Mar Block" cars and locomotive to accommodate the crowds from the Del Mar Horse Races. For the time being, F59PHI locomotives can still be found pulling the Pacific Surfliners, though they are on borrowed time as they are now months, if not weeks, away from retirement.

At Noell Street:

Train 1: Southbound Coaster Train 662 rolls through Noell Street after crossing over at CP Convair.

Train 2: Northbound Amtrak Pacific Surfliner Train 591 with the Del Mar Block accelerates over Noell Street as it paces a northbound Green Line Trolley.

At Sorrento Valley:

Train 3: Northbound Amtrak Pacific Surfliner Train 591 is seen again at the south end of CP Sorrento as is slows for a meet with Coaster 664.

Train 4: Southbound Coaster Train 664 accelerates out of Sorrento Valley with two locomotives.

Like Amtrak's F59PHIs, Coaster's F40PHM-2Cs are nearing retirement. They have recently been suffering from increasing mechanical woes. In many cases as with this train, two locomotives are needed because one has a functioning prime mover and motive power system, but no head end power, and the other has functioning head end power but can't provide motive power.
