NATO AWACS surveillance plane en route to monitor skies near Ukraine

(18 Apr 2014) A NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) surveillance plane took off from its air base in Germany on Friday and was en-route to monitor skies above Ukraine and Romania.
The surveillance aircraft flew from NATO's base in Geilenkirchen, eastern Germany.
Ukraine and Russia agreed on Thursday in Geneva to take tentative steps toward calming tensions along their shared border after weeks of conflict.
The deal calls for disarming all paramilitary groups and the immediate return of all government buildings seized across the country.
The 28-nation alliance's AWACS started daily sorties over Romania and Poland on 14 March to monitor the situation in Ukraine, following tensions with Russia over Crimea.
