Dogtooth tuna are renowned for being one of the most addictive fish to hunt, where spearfishermen must compete with the speed and strength of the tuna. Any lacking experience, skill or quality equipment is going to show when you come up against one of these fun yet formidable catches. It’s important to have sufficient quality spearfishing gear all in good nick to land a dogtooth tuna. A reliable float and float line are imperative when hunting such a powerful fish.

Spearing doggies requires you to have a team to work with. There's nothing easy about spearing dogtooth tuna. There needs to be one person controlling burley distribution, one controlling the flasher and one person with a large powerful gun that can guarantee the success of the hunt. Without the constant attraction provided by both the burley and the flasher, fish aren't going to stay around very long and your chances of getting a decent shot at the fish are slim.

Taylor recommends that the spearer aims for the shoulder at an angle to impede the ability of the fish to run as much as possible and give yourself maximum control of the fish from the get-go and the best chance of landing the tuna. As the burley or flasher controller, your immediate reaction to the spearer below levelling out as they chase or shoot their target should be to go straight over to the float line and feed float line down in deep water to reduce drag. Once the shot is made, provide tension to the float line pulling the fish to the surface to prevent the dogtooth tuna gaining any momentum, reaching the reef or detaching from the spear. Once closer to the surface a second shaft should be placed into the fish to ensure the catch.

Always be aware of your environment. Be aware of the physical features and of any sharks looking for a free feed.
