In this NEPSI Tech Talk, Paul Steciuk, Co-Founder of NEPSI kicks off the first ever NEPSI Tech Talk and discusses the common misconceptions around medium voltage reactive compensation (power factor correction) in industrial plants where high-pulse drives or active front-end drives are used. Common questions like; Do you need filters? Can you apply standard capacitor banks? Do I need to worry about resonance? Are answered.
The topic is covered from the ground up. Starting with 6,12,18-pulse drive and AFE drive topology. Their harmonic content and common misconceptions are discussed. NEPSI, by way of a simple systems teaches the analysis techniques required to address these questions and common misconceptions. Examples of where AFE drive and high-pulse drives can present problems are provided and the recommend approach to mitigating them.
