Josh O’Connor (The Crown) and Jessie Buckley (Wild Rose) share their lives in theatre memories, from transforming childhood homes into stages to recently starring in the National Theatre's film of Romeo & Juliet. The two friends interview one another and reveal the stories behind their careers.

Life in Stages is the National Theatre’s interview series profiling some of the biggest names in British theatre. Filmed on the empty Lyttelton stage, each episode features a pair of creatives reflecting on their stage careers, and revealing the funny, personal and poignant stories behind everything from their earliest theatre memory to their biggest professional highs and lows.

About Josh O’Connor
British actor, had a major role portraying Larry Durrell in ITV's The Durrells. He had his breakthrough playing the lead role of a closeted sheep farmer in Francis Lee's romantic drama God's Own Country (2017), for which he won the BIFA Award for Best Actor.

O'Connor gained wider recognition for his portrayal of Charles, Prince of Wales, in the Netflix drama series The Crown (2019–2020), winning the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for the role. He has since starred in the period drama Emma (2020), the crime drama La chimera (2023), the romantic sports film Challengers (2024) and heist drama The Mastermind (2025).

He portrayed Romeo in the National Theatre's National Theatre Live adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.

About Jessie Buckley
Irish actress and singer, began her career in 2008 as a contestant on the BBC TV talent show I'd Do Anything, in which she came second. A RADA graduate, her early onscreen appearances were in BBC television series, such as War & Peace (2016) and Taboo (2017). Buckley made her film debut playing the lead role in Beast (2017), and had her breakthrough starring in the musical film Wild Rose (2018). Her performance as an aspiring country music singer in the latter earned her a nomination for the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.

Buckley's career progressed with starring roles in the HBO miniseries Chernobyl (2019), I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020), season four of Fargo (2020), The Lost Daughter (2021), Men (2022) and Women Talking (2022).

She portrayed Romeo in the National Theatre's National Theatre Live adaptation of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.
