OI LIVE is back, and we are talking about two person mechanics, angles and position. Officials Institute (OI) Chairman of the Board, Joshua Schroeder, hosted this months meeting on November 22, 2024. Every year, once a year, OI has a meeting devoted specifically with 2 person mechanics in mind, showing video clips with only two officials on the floor. This meeting tried to focus more on where to stand and what to watch during plays but we also discussed a few rules based on the plays that happened as well.
OI LIVE meetings are conducted the third Thursday of each month at 7:00 pm with the intent to provide instruction for basketball officials, and assist in helping everyone get better. Watching and discussing videos in a group brings better awareness in how to apply the rules of basketball in real game situations and provides a fun and supportive environment for officials to ask questions and share philosophies by fellow officials. Asking questions while analyzing video is a valuable learning tool and by giving repetitive looks at the same play increases retention of rules and philosophies of rules. All videos shown are actual high school basketball videos.

This meeting includes 7 various video clips all two person games and all discussion around 2 person mechanics. AND a BONUS CLIP preview of next months meeting topic.
0:00 - Intro
0:33 - Out of bounds play, above the free throw line extended on the Leads sideline. How is this administered properly?
5:11 - Transition play after a steal leading to a crash in the paint on the other end and the ruling official calling a block. Let's break this play down.
17:06 - Another transition ending in a foul call, but this time both officials blew their whistle and signaled the foul. How can this be avoided?
21:52 - Fast break to the basket with a push foul called by the Lead who was straight lined on the play. Did he get it right?
31:12 - 3 point shot attempt missed and is followed by some messy contact on the rebound that wasn't called. Did they miss it or pass on purpose? Watch and see.
42:16 - Put back play on a rebound with a foul called on the shot, counting the basket.
47:24 - Three point basket was shot and made with one official signaling a 3 point basket and the other official signaling 2 points. Did the officials stop play appropriately to fix this?
53:36 - BONUS CLIP - Traveling play, next months topic.
57:56 - Meeting Schedule
Watching video clips is a good way to stay connected to the skill of officiating basketball but education and learning can more effectively be attained doing it in a group with some direction from a key speaker. Remembering specific rules and application of those rules is easier when visual aids are used to present in a way that is easy to listen to and understand.
The Officials Institute, and their monthly video review meetings, create a fun environment that allows participants to speak up and voice their opinions on plays without negative retribution or rebuttals. Everyone's opinion is worth something and adds to the overall learning experience that everyone should strive for, regardless of years of experience. Breaking down film in slow motion and freeze frames helps to "retrain our brain" so when we see the same plays in real time we are in a better position mentally to get the call right.
