The Panama canal goes way back in time, and is a concept that has been considered by numerous nations. France was the country to start what we know today as the Panama canal. However, the project was abandoned. The United States acquired the canal from France, however the local government was uncooperative. The United States struck a deal with the rebellious state of Panama. If they secured their independence, the US would be granted the panama canal zone. With the display of the US's fleet, Panama was secured from Colombia.
