Abbots Langley, a large village with a history that dates back to 1045. The village is mostly known as the proud birthplace of Nicholas Breakspear circa 1100, the only Englishman to ever become Pope. The man was born at Bedmond Farm in the parish of Abbots Langley.
The former Pope's birthplace has two churches, St. Lawrence's in Abbots Langley, and the Church of the Ascension – 'the tin church' – in Bedmond. The first seems not only to be a place for believers but also a burial place for a young girl, Mary Ann Trebble.

The legends say that the creepy girl rises from the grave once a year and returns to the vicarage. Over the years Trebble’s ghost has been seen walking from the vicarage to her grave in the churchyard of St Lawrence.

Stories claim that a young Mary Ann Trebble used to be a housekeeper or servant at the vicarage before World War I. Her life drastically ends in 1914, some say due to pneumonia and others think she died 'unnaturally'.

Opinions differ, but most of them state that young Miss Trebble was mistreated by a vicar's wife and after the death, she regularly comes back every year right after Halloween.
Witnesses speak that the maid returns around All Souls Day, which in the Catholic Church and some Christian denominations is a day of prayer and remembrance for the faithful departed. The day is annually observed on November 2.
