Grades of organization
Invertebrates show all grades of organization.
Acellular or Protoplasmic level: Unicellular organisms like protozoans exhibit protoplasmic grade of organization. All the activities are performed by single celled body.
Cellular level: Cellular grade is characteristic of sponges. In sponges individual cells differentiate during development to perform special functions. Hence cells exhibit division of labour for performing specialized functions.
Tissue level: Cnidarians (coelenterates) and Ctenophores exhibit tissue grade of organization. In these two phyla the body cells form tissues.
Organ level: Platyhelminths are the first to have reached the organ level of organization with the arrangement of tissue to form organs.
Organs-system grade: Where organs join together in a system to perform some function is typical of all higher vertebrates.
