Dhari Devi Temple Uttrakhand–
Standing on a rocky island in the middle of the roaring Alaknanda River, the Dhari Devi Temple of Uttarakhand is one of the most powerful and mysterious Shakti Peethas of the Himalayas. Often called “The Guardian Goddess of Uttarakhand”, Dhari Devi is believed to protect the region from natural calamities, preserving the spiritual balance of the entire Garhwal area.
With the sound of rushing waters, echoing chants, and an aura that feels ancient and alive, Dhari Devi Temple is not just a place of worship — it is a living legend.
📜 History of Dhari Devi Temple
The temple’s origin traces back centuries, although the exact date remains unknown due to the lack of written records. According to historical accounts and local beliefs:
• The original shrine was located exactly where the goddess’s idol was found by villagers after a devastating flood ages ago.
• Since then, the idol of Dhari Devi has remained in the open air, as the deity is believed to reject enclosure.
• The temple has been rebuilt multiple times after floods, yet the idol always remains in its original natural state, facing the river.
Dhari Devi is considered the Ugra (fierce) form of Goddess Kali during the day and is associated with the Kalīka temple of Kalimath, which represents her Shant (calm) form.
🔱 Story & Mythological Background
According to popular legend:
Long ago, a massive flood hit the village of Dharo. Locals heard mysterious cries coming from the river and followed the voice. They discovered a divine idol of a goddess stuck between the rocks.
The villagers placed the idol on a high rock, and since then it has been worshipped as Dhari Devi, named after the village Dharo.
Another belief says:
• Dhari Devi is the upper half of the goddess, while the lower half is worshipped at Kalimath, where the fierce side of the goddess performed destruction during the battle against demons.
The two temples together represent the complete form of the goddess.
🌩 Mystery & Truth Behind Dhari Devi
The temple is surrounded by many mysteries:
1. The Idol Changes Its Face
Locals and pilgrims claim that the face of the idol changes — appearing like a young girl, a woman, and an old lady depending on time of day and divine energies.
2. The Temple Cannot Be Covered
It is believed that the moment the idol is enclosed or shifted unnaturally, divine wrath may unfold.
3. The 2013 Kedarnath Tragedy Connection
A popular belief links the Kedarnath flash floods to this temple:
• On 16 June 2013, the idol was relocated to build a dam.
• Within hours, the Himalayan region saw one of its worst natural disasters.
• Locals believe this happened because the deity was disturbed.
While scientifically debatable, spiritually the belief remains strong among devotees.
4. The Living Goddess
Many believe that the goddess’s presence is alive and that she protects the Char Dham region, ensuring natural balance.
🛕 Architecture & Environment
• The temple has a simple Himalayan-style structure.
• It stands on a raised concrete platform, connected by a small bridge from the highway.
• Surrounded by mountains and the rushing Alaknanda River, the atmosphere is extremely powerful and serene.
