Scary Start to Pennsylvania Section 1 on the Appalachian Trail DWG to Fox Gap

A scary start to our trek through Pennsylvania! But first we introduce the new crew that is taking on the Pennsylvania portion of the Appalachian Trail. Sarge, Jazz and Twitch are all back, but Fossil is not with us on this one. Erik is joining us now and needs a trail name. Sarge wants to call him Sir Cramps-a-lot because Erik tends to cramp up on these long section hikes. But we'll see if that sticks or not.

Pennsylvania Section 1 is 15.8 miles long and we are breaking it into two hikes. We'll start it off in Delaware Water Gap, PA and this first hike will take us to the halfway point in Fox Gap. We already covered the first half mile of Pennsylvania when we completed our New Jersey section hikes.

This was a fantastic day to kick off Pennsylvania! The weather was perfect, and we had wonderful views all along the Kittatinny ridgeline, starting with an amazing look at Mount Tammany across the Delaware River in New Jersey.

Our lunch break was probably the most eventful of all our hikes to date! We stopped at an overlook known as Lunch Rocks. With a huge view over the Delaware Valley, it is the perfect spot to enjoy lunch. But that's not all. Our friend Julie of YouTube channel Julie Jordan Scott: Creative Life Midwife fame was having a live stream just as we arrived there. We had a strong 5G signal, so we jumped onto her live stream and said hello!

Now for the scary part! Just as we were wrapping up our lunch break, a copperhead snake slithered right under Twitch's legs and behind his backpack. He was just about to hop off the boulder he was sitting on when he luckily noticed the snake moving beneath him. He was able to safely move off to the side and pull his pack away, but it could have been a much different outcome. Had he not noticed the snake he most likely would have stepped on it coming off the boulder and would have certainly been bit! Now that would have definitely ruined this otherwise perfect day!
