In 1978, after members of the Poughkeepsie branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) heard Poughkeepsie Historian Elizabeth Carter speak about the city’s history, they were inspired to find a way to share this information with the entire community. Margaret Nijhuis, president of the branch, contacted Professor James Steerman, director of Vassar’s film workshop, about creating a film that would showcase the city on the Hudson.
The Poughkeepsie AAUW and Mrs. Carter initiated proposals for the film and secured funding from local organizations, including the Dutchess County Arts Council, the Gannett Foundation, the Poughkeepsie Area Fund, IBM, and the City of Poughkeepsie. The film premiered in 1982.
