However, the glass floats played a significant role in the development of Otaru's glass industry. Today, the craft of making glass fishing floats is preserved by a single artisan at Japan's only remaining workshop dedicated to this traditional art.

As the birthrate declines and the population ages, there are an increasing number of cases in which craftsmen and small and medium-sized enterprises that have supported Japanese culture are forced to close down because they are unable to pass on their legacy due to problems such as a lack of successors.
