Glass fishing floats, once used in herring fishing and other North Pacific fisheries, were essential tools in bustling fishing grounds. These transparent floats, blending seamlessly into the ocean, gradually gave way to plastic buoys as times changed. However, the glass floats played a significant role in the development of Otaru's glass industry. Today, the craft of making glass fishing floats is preserved by a single artisan at Japan's only remaining workshop dedicated to this traditional art.

As the birthrate declines and the population ages, there are an increasing number of cases in which craftsmen and small and medium-sized enterprises that have supported Japanese culture are forced to close down because they are unable to pass on their legacy due to problems such as a lack of successors. Focusing on the social issue of business succession that Japan faces, we will introduce RarePros (rare professionals) who are still working hard to preserve Japanese culture and tradition.
