The oldest Mexican restaurant in Los Angeles is El Cholo Spanish Cafe, which opened its doors in 1923. Founded by Alejandro and Rosa Borquez as the Sonora Café, it was renamed El Cholo in 1925 after a customer sketched a caricature of a field worker and labeled it "El Cholo" . The restaurant is credited with introducing the American-style burrito to the United States in the 1930s .
El Cholo has remained a family-owned establishment for over a century, currently operated by Ron Salisbury, grandson of the founders. The original location at 1121 South Western Avenue in Los Angeles continues to serve traditional Sonoran-inspired dishes, including enchiladas, tamales, and the iconic green corn tamales . The restaurant's rich history and enduring legacy make it a cherished institution in Los Angeles.
