'Society' was written by American singer-songwriter Jerry Hannan and performed by Eddie Vedder for the soundtrack to the film Into The Wild. Like all the music from the record, 'Society' was designed to attempt to get into the head of Christopher Johnson "Alexander Superfly" McCandless. It was made to capture the essence of McCandless's spirit, from the time he left everything behind for one of America's great adventures thru to his untimely passing in August 1992.

McCandless set out to prove - if only to himself - that a person can survive this life without all the abject consumerism and materialism that surrounds us at all times. He helped to demonstrate how much we take for granted in our lives. A result of the now barely-noticed mainstays of all the modern conveniences in modern America.

Chris's story inspired thousands of people to reevaluate their lives, be brave, and seek out adventures of their own. He will not be soon forgotten.
